I ve tested Modx this week. I have nothing about the aspect of the back end. It is really clear and easy to use for anyone.
    But...
I tried in many ways to add or create easily galleries, but unfortunately I found the extra Gallery really unclear and the tv image not enough sufficient.
I posted topics in english and even french version of the forum and I had 0 answer.
I dont think it should that much complicated to create a portfolio website, but with modx it became really tuff !!!

It could be good to add more documentation about the extra gallery or more exemple to show how create online books....

I think I ll return on my favorite cms so far. The back end is not that good than modx, but it is more logical to work on it.

There is only 1 kind of gallery available for MODx Revolution.
While Evolution... you’ll get a bunch of it.

If you’re in rush for developing a modx based gallery site, with less experience with modx itself, try Evolution, and try all its galleries.

MODx is great, but knowing how to use it well makes it perfect!

Well, is not a bad advice.
I actually also installed the evolution version. I tried Maxi Gallery, but I found the usability not so good.
Do you have experience on those galleries extra ?

I am trying to do a hompage that display last works (with ditto or getressource). Each work have an image. Clicking on one of this work, I need to display a list of images. I really didnt find yet the good process to get what I need !

I posted this topic about it http://modxcms.com/forums/index.php/topic,55356.msg318695.html#msg318695

Looks like I missed your topic.

I tried MaxiGallery. It’s one of a popular gallery for Evolution, since it was born at the earliest time before MODx hit version 1.0.0
I don’t like it too much either, and since then I tried several galleries (I did), and found a gallery that was hidden beneath a russian forum (mark the ’hidden’ as they wrote things in cyrillics).

I made many tweaking to that gallery to suit my own need, and returned it back again to the public. Well, story goes on, I’ve been drown myself to continue the development, since I think everybody likes it too.

          Try Easy 2 Gallery RC-1.
Or try the development edge version (RC-2) on GitHub. The publication was just made on the other board.

          PS:
          Sorry for the long story.
It’s just to mention you that MODx is based on a bunch of community contribution, and not even backed up by company(ies)/partner(s)/association like others.
Realized this: have you ever find a MODx’s module/snippet that ask you for money (other than donation or e-commerce like FoxyCart) ?

So just be patient. Perhaps your post was just missed by other people because of an unfortunate circumstance.
And I’m not a MODx’s core-dev team, but you can ask me everything.

I’ll swear by maxigallery. It could definitely use some more options for gallery types (smoothgallery is the one I prefer). I definitely had to go in and tweak things to my own liking, but overall I think it works great. Especially that everything can be done through the front-end.

I love how easy it is for Easy2Gallery to add custom mods to it http://sottwell.com/e2g-plugin.html. And EvoGallery’s multiple upload (using uploadify) is very nice. E2G also is not tied to a resource, as both MaxiGallery and EvoGallery are. And EvoGallery has the pxh class embedded for really flexible templating.

Talking about plugin, you should try how E2G RC-2 works.
It’s just like how MODx’s events work.
While you can have the voting interface for snippet, you can also make the result script for the module’s dashboard. I’ll wait for your input.

Unfortunately I’m up to my eyebrows in Revo for the same site I was originally going to use E2G for. So it will be a while before I can deal with it.

I would like to be able to control how the gallery displays by making a TPL instead of having to edit the gallery template in the core.

You should never edit the gallery tpl in the core; you can easily override the tpl’s in any of the Gallery snippets.
