Hi All,
I am in the process of researching content management platforms. The ideal platform will have excellent community building capabilities.
At the moment, I am really liking the idea of Jomsocial, but I do not like Joomla. I have also looked at Buddypress for Wordpress, but I don’t know if it is going to give me the flexibility that I would like. Plus, Buddypress leans towards blogging - I would like a blogging feature, but do not want it to be the meat.
I am curious if Modx has any such community plugins like Jomsocial for Joomla? Or if a community site could be developed easily.
Thank you!

AFAIK, MODx is not suitable for this kind of task.

MODx is great, but knowing how to use it well makes it perfect!

Defining what you want in your social community application would go a lot further in determining whether it can be done. It may be that you’ll find out that MODx can do what you want it to if you write out your requirements here. Many of us could help you think about how to use existing addons or building new ones to handle your needs. It may turn out you need some other application like the one goldsky suggested.

MODx is very capable of doing this, but is pretty short of mature add-on components to do the job. You would probably have to build most of the tools yourself, so it would depend on your coding skills.
I wonder if CivicSpace might be a better choice:

Actually, I guess it’s now been folded into Drupal 5 and also available as civiCRM:

Thank you. I will look into those platforms. One of my main considerations is the flexibility of the system. I am not a guru programmer, but I can get my way around it and build basic apps.
When you say ’community building’, how is that different than what I see on these ModX forums for instance? Pardon the stupidity of the question, but what other features are typically included in a ’community’ type site that is not achieved by the elements that make up this forums section?

I’ve been mulling over the idea of a community site for some time now. It will of course need discussion forums on various topics, but I also want guest "speaker" articles, visitor’s personal stories, professional advice on various topics, shared recipes, and user-driven galleries with voting. Maybe even a classified ads section. If a "community" site is targeted at a specific audience, especially by location, it may also include local business advertising, as well as recommendations and ratings of local businesses. Events, all kinds of things.
