Bespoke snippet request

Hi all

Sorry for such a specific request here, i’ve searched the forums and cant find anything relevant.

Im looking to add the functionality of an event email reminder service. The idea being a user logs in and can manage (add/edit/delete) event reminders (birthdays etc)

So system would log name (of event), date (of event), time of reminder option (month, week, day). Once the deadline is met an email is sent to the user with the details.

Is this achievable or has it even been done before?

You can certainly create something like that to store events in a custom database table, but you would need something always running to see if it was time to send the alert. That or a cron job running every few minutes to check for any that need to be sent. Otherwise, the only way to do it is wait until someone hits the web site to test the conditions, which for some sites that might always have traffic could work, but certainly would not be reliably on time.
