An add-on that allows managers to simply change the sort-order of documents by drag-n-drop in the left-hand column would be awesome.
Additionally, the ability to jump straight to editing a document rather than having to click the "edit" button would also be nice (users aren’t very bright... ;-)

You are in luck both of these feature already exist.
To sort documents in a drag-n-drop tool, go to Modules and select the DocManager and select Sort Menu Items, then just follow the instructions and presto.
To jump straight into edit mode use the contextual menu by clicking on the document’s icon rather than the name in the document tree and select Edit this document form the menu.
