In functionality, MODx includes much of the sheer flexibility of building from scratch using Django or similar, thanks to the custom template variables.  However, the admin lacks one thing that Django’s auto-admin enables - custom layouts of the form fields.

Let me explain why this can be a problem.  On some pages, the Template Variables are actually as important, if not more important, than the standard fields.  For example if the pages are included with Ditto into another page, or are used to set up staff profiles.

I’d like to see a way to ’re-arrange’ the fields or provide special templates for editing certain pages, in the same way different front-end templates can be specified for each page.  While the current system is fine for us (the techie-end of the audience), it’s confusing for the average person to use, even with training.  I’m finding they forget to scroll down "just to see if the current page has extra fields", and so leave some rather important ones blank (out of sight, out of mind...)

I haven’t dug into the code yet, as I wanted to hear what the community thought, whether this is already in progress, and if I’ve missed a better way to implement what I’m after!
