The problem with trying to integrate these systems is that none of them are designed (based on known industry standards for authentication and authorization) to work with external user/permission systems...
That’s the nice part about Vanilla, it’s more receptive to being modified to work with an external permission. With it’s custom database field mappings AND core library override system, the possibilities with Vanilla are almost endless. The integration that I’ve done with Vanilla to MODx so far could be classified as more of an addon. One could easily remove the TWO files that integrate it with MODx and go right back to the out-of-the-box setup.

I understand that it’s that kind of extensibility that we’re moving toward with MODx (or something very close). Amazing! Any application that allows a programmer to override the core to any extent he/she desires is a fine piece of work!

I’ve hit a roadblock... What I’m trying to do is have Vanilla grab MODx’s session ID from the user_attributes database and then start the session via the ID. But Vanilla still doesn’t know what user is logged in on the MODx side.

So my current task is getting Vanilla to read MODx Cookies since MODx stores the session id in a cookie. But I have very limited knowledge about the cookie domains, names, and such. Is there anyone willing to give me some tips on this subject?

There’s really two obstacles here I can’t get around. The problem in the first paragraph can’t be solved until the second paragraph problem is solved. One last question before I take a break for today is this: Even if I solve the second problem, is it even possible to LOAD an open session if you know the ID of that session?

Thanks for any help any of you can provide.

Yes, it is... scroll down to the section "Passing the Session ID" http://il2.php.net/session

You can even save a current session, load up a different session and grab its values and save them, then re-open your current session and load in the values you saved from the other one. That’s how I handled saving a shopping cart when the user goes to check out at the https address; that is considered a different domain and thus gets a totally different session. I pass the original (non-https) session ID in the URL, or you can use a form with a hidden field and pass it in the POST, using the form’s submit button instead of a link. Or use javascript and do a form.submit when clicking on the link. Best it to make the form work as usual, then use the javascript to hide the submit button and create the link, that way the transfer doesn’t fail if the user doesn’t have javascript.

See MODx and Vanilla - Item 3 in regard the integration that I’m working on. I don’t know if anyone else has taken on the responsibility.

I’m sort of considering just making a native MODx forum modeled after Vanilla using the same Lussumo Framework. This would somewhat satisfy both parties (those looking for native and those looking for a bridge). The implementation I’ve been dancing around would basically use the same database structure as Vanilla so as to allow an easy conversion.

This is all made possible due to the fabulous OO code of Vanilla! I may add though that I haven’t started this sort of implementation yet, I’m still understanding the Lussumo Framework and won’t begin work until the 0.9.7 branch has somewhat stabilized.
