Does MODx come with Forums or are they a plug-in? If they come with MODx where would I find the option to edit them in the MODx admin panel? I’m new to MODx’s CMS, but not to coding, so thank you for your help smiley

MODx has not built in forums. There is a beta SMF module available, though, that will make it easier to synch users between MODx and SMF.

Is it possible to make MODx communicate with already existing forum software, such as phpBB? Maybe have the user log in sessions carry over to third party forums, such as phpBB or PunBB? Again, thanks for all your help, I’m starting to fall in love with MODx despite no forums smiley

That’s what the SMF module does for Simple Machines Forum. If there’s an API, then yes it should be possible. IPB can be made to work as well.

Some sort of integration with phpBB is on my personal long-term to-do list, as I have a number of phpBB sites that I’d like to move over to MODx - and more importantly a number of phpBB users and forum content that I’d like to move in. Also, I’ve spent some amount of time creating a custom version that I can use on multiple sites and I’d like to re-use that work. I wouldn’t rule out writing a phpBB port, but it wouldn’t necessarily be recognisable as phpBB (although the data would be easily imported).

No, I don't know what OpenGeek's saying half the time either.

Should I also mention that Wendy (aka Djamoer) has done some work on Phorum integration (which he does not have time to complete at the moment) ?

If there’s an API library for the forum then you can use it inside a MODx plugin. If there’s no API available for the forum then you can use the MODxAPI library from within the forum software to communicate with MODx.

I don’t have an existing phpBB site, I was just curious. Now I’m using SMF for a site I’m building though, it’s going to be pretty advanced. I’m attempting to build an entire online social community with MODx as the foundation. wink
