Has anyone looked into (or made) a snippet from the ESPG gallery at

    http://www.quirm.net/page.php?id=7

It has nice basic features (automatic thumbnails, caching of thumbnails, file based image info, simple admin system, easy to create new galleries by just FTPing directories.)

I prefer it over the other galleries I’ve seen but but I was not able to easly make a snippet out of it.
    Any suggestions?

Have you tried the Maxigallery snippet here? I think it covers all of these features you listed, and is massively simple to implement/deploy.

I can see the advantage of this, no need to upload files via the gallery manager to create galleries, so it would be much easier to create larger galleries.

I’m thinking of starting to use phpThumb in MaxiGallery and allow people to add pictures to galleries from allready uploaded images, or they could upload pics to use into a certain folder through the snippet when adding new pics to a gallery. When using phpThumb, the images would not need to be modified as phpThumb can apply the wanted filters and other settings when the pics are called first time and then cache the modified pics, so it won’t need to be done at every request. The pics are retrieved from the cache as long as the original picture remains unmodified. Then users could use same pics in different galleries with different filter/size/etc settings..

But I haven’t actually looked into phpThumb yet, so I don’t know that is it usable in image galleries.. how well the picture caching actually works etc..

But if I’m going to use it, I thought of using a modified version of iManager what users could use to add the pictures to galleries. The iManager is basically a GUI to phpThumb. I have thought of something like that it would be possible to define the default iManager settings per galleries when adding snippet calls to documents and when user adds pictures to a certain gallery, the iManager "toolbox" properties would be set to the defaults for that gallery, but it would be possible still to change them per picture. And ofcourse own settings would be needed for all the picture sizes (currently 3 at MaxiGallery, thumbnail, mid-size, large)

Anyone have any experience on using phpThumb? Comments on using it in the gallery snippet?

I have tried MaxiGallery and I find it to be lacking compared to espg. The main feature I need is the FTP upload. I can upload dozens or hundreds of pictures at a time (should I so desire) and all the galleries are there, thumbnails, etc. It’s great.

That’s why I was wondering if anyone has looked into it. Instead of trying to patch together maxigallery with a thumbnail maker, etc. Why not just modify espg to fit in as a snippet? The way it works seem to lend itself well to a snippet.

My problems in making a snippet of it came from the fact that it is coded expecting things to be within a directory and via the snippet it’s not. I don’t think it’s a huge problem to fix but I haven’t had the time to look into it properly (and I’m not sure when I will, which is why I’m asking someone else to wink have a few projects that use espg now and it could be that if I move them to MODx I would need to spend the time trying. Or it could be that it would really be a lot of work to make into a snippet and it’s not worth it. This is why I’m asking.

If anyone has a little extra time to look into, I would be very grateful and I think it would be doing a great service to the modx community.

I’m not "patching" MaxiGallery with a thumbnail maker, it can allready do thumbnails just fine.. MaxiGallery will be (or actually allready is) much more flexible and feature rich system than espg. It can be embedded to the site look and security much better to allow for example user submitted galleries etc... But I undestand that it doesnt suit your needs in the current state of it, when it’s lacking the possibility to upload pictures via ftp, but this is coming some day.

I don’t know if Gallery 2 supports uploading pictures to galleries via ftp, but there is an modx integration for it in the works (altought I think that the developing of it has slowed down for the moment..)

I’m not following.. what’s not possible to be in filesystem when doing snippets? MaxiGallery for example uses many files from the filesystem.. I suggest that you’d try to do the integration yourself and ask help when/if you have problems.. I don’t think that someone will just do it for free.. Many people have their own projects going.
