    A couple of things that came to mind recently:

    1. Manager auto update. Manager queries the Modx repository periodically, or on startup, for new versions of installed snippets, plugins and modules, prompts the user to upgrade, with option to back up existing versions. Of course this idea could be expanded to a whole integrated snippet search and install feature. Best as a module I suppose to keep the core thin.

    2. Snippet call builder. Allow user to build snippet calls by selecting from a list of options. This could be done by a standardized format in the snippet header that is read and parsed by the builder. For instance:
    /*
    <--parameters-->
    parameter1, description, type (e.g. yes/no, numeric, etc.), options, default
    parameter2, ...
    <--parameters-->
    */

    The builder could perhaps be a popup window that pastes into the calling object (template, chunk, TV). I would think this could be a module, but the standardized snippet header is the main thing.

      Snippet call builder. Allow user to build snippet calls by selecting from a list of options.

      Now that’s a nice idea laugh, I think that would be a really useful facility for some people - you could take the information and parse it into a form (like you say, in a module) and output a snippet call. It would certainly help people with learning the syntax associated with the snippets.

      As for the standardised snippet header, I’m up for that expecially when it comes to names, descriptions and versions etc.

      Anybody else got any thoughts on this?

        I’d really like to implement a standard header that could be used to extend the functionality in the manager to make them easier to work with.

          I have been thinking about a snippetbuilder in the past and I was thinking about using the information that is available on the properties tab. That information already describes parameters. To build a snippetcall the user could just change the values in a form like on the properties tab and anything that is different from the default could be added to a snippetcall string.

          The things that stopped me are:
          - Developers have to use the properties tab
          - Properties tab field is limited in length (there is a bug in the tracker for it)
          - Using the properties tab makes installing of snippets more difficult (user has to paste the default properties string)
          - More advanced types of variables are needed. Now there is only int, string etc.. possible. I think it should be easy for users to select for example webusers, webgroups, directories, etc... so extra types could be added or even have the possibilities to define your own custom types through a TV like system.

          I hope that made a bit sense.

            Nice call, even though I can see no reason why this won’t be implemented.

            Considering the installation process that might be getting a little bit more complex, we can solve that with resources installer wink
