In OO-speak, I’d like to be able to subclass documents and add attributes and methods to them.
O yeah! Quite critical topic, obviously. MODx is currently trying to find a path between being a framework (OO-like, as your request) or being an easy to use CMS.
Right now, it looks a bit undecisive concerning this matter. On one side there are newbies, fearing to see any PHP code, on the other there are developers (like you) who miss "subclassing docs". Just speaking for myself: as a PHP-casual user/coder I can get along quite well with MODx. I can accomplish things I need, as long as they do not get in conflict with the current MODx architecture. So, I try to decide beforehand if MODx is the right tool to use for a given case. And there are some, for which it is NOT the right tool.
I do not blame MODx here: The system is great and the team is doing a fabulous job! But, there is no "it-does-it-all-tool", nor can there be one.
I simply love the MODx-guys and the approach they’ ve taken. But "subclassing" is not a part of the MODx-world, as far as I can see. This reminds me more of common frameworks and - as such - of doing it for your own. smiley

Firstly, sorry for my bad english ^^

I think that modx *must* stay like it is actually... not for all the different component but in the way that it is fully personalisable and you can add it special features as you want easier than in an other CMS.
Like most of you, i suppose, i’ve tested a lot of CMS. Recently, i’d work with Typo3 which have some features to use it as a cms and as groupware. Most of all, you can code your own plugins, etc. But, in a way, using typoscript is not very "user friendly"...

As a consequence, modx and his snippets can work as framework in which you can add functionnalities that are already coded by someone, or, if you have some skill in coding, you can code some functionnalities yourself. You have just to know php (which is a simple language) and a little bit of the MODxAPI.

I fear that being an easy to use CMS will closed more the developpement of components by other people... For exemple, if you try to implement a cart in SPIP, you have to put your mouth in the code of cms. That’s not really that for MODx.

So, implement functionnalities in this "framework" (not really one, but not so far) could be great for people who want to develop applications more and more sophisticated.

If you have no skill for programming, you can "install" snippets that people share in this great community. To get it more "user friendly", we can imagine implementing functionnalities to install snippets easily (cut & paste is not very difficult but some people are lost with all the parameters) and to implement them in a page with form wher you tick/modify options... (just an idea shocked)

Gee, call it inside info or whatever you’d like, but there is no reason why you can’t have MODx function exactly like it does now (only with a better user system and manager), but also offer incredibly powerful:
        [*] CMF capabilities
        [*] optimized database independence
[*] extendable core without killing any upgrade paths
        [*] subclassing documents
        [*] proper i18n, l10n and cultural handling
        [*] versioning
        [*] workflow

You’ll have to wait a little longer, some of those are 1.0 features.
No, I don't know what OpenGeek's saying half the time either.

Those are not the 0.9.5 feature list, but are on the radar and in various stages of completion.

                    - Heirarchical User/Document Groups (i.e., subgroups of user groups would be nice)
                    - A better UI for managing user Groups
                    - Ability to assign a chunk as a template var without having to snippet hack it
                    - OR Subtemplates (templates within templates)
                    - In manager, a user should have the ability to start within a subdirectory...i.e., if you had home/about/subdir1 & home/about/subdir2, and you wanted user X to only manage home/about/subdir2 and NOT home/about, then he/she should "start" (view as root) home/about/subdir2...NOT home as root, like it does now
                    - Mass Document group/TV/variable changing (if i want to change 3000 pages to a different document group...and i shouldnt have to download a plugin to do this)

Other than that, great CMS! Liking it very much - is working pretty well for the corporate environment we’re using it in now.

Those should come after the next release (0.9.5 in late beta now)

                      - OR Subtemplates (templates within templates)
Why will using chunks not work for this now?

The 095 Doc Manager will do this quite nicely.
