I have never even looked at a CMS before, but my html and css are solid. I’ve installed Modx Revolution and I’ve utilized some basic tutorials but no where have I found the really basic stuff. I place my style sheets in a "Styles" folder for sites I hand code. Where do they go in Modx? Or rather, how do I get the manager to store them, and where will that be?

I’ve been looking for a really basic planning tutorial that doesn’t talk about all the cool stuff I’ll eventually get to use, but instead gives me an overall and practical concept of where things need to be and how to get them there. You know, something like telling a Windows newbie how to open Windows Explorer and discover where stuff is and how to add new folders.

Well, there was a few good tutorials that assumed that I knew where and how, and they will be more helpful a bit later on, but right now I need to know where things will go and how to get them there. Hmmm. I wish I knew what I was talking about.

Now, this raises the question of who is the target market for Modx Revolution? Is it mostly those that know their way around a CMS, or is it for Modx Evolution users?

    You know what I think?

If Modx Revolution had a basic (assume nothing) hand holding tutorial then it probably would be a painless learning curve. I’ve got that feeling from all I’ve read - yet I’m still lost at sea.

      Hello,

maybe you can start with :

http://svn.modxcms.com/docs/display/revolution/Welcome+to+Revolution+2.0 (first steps after a successful installation)

      have a look to :

http://bobsguides.com/ Bob gives a lot of examples and explanations both on Revo or Evo versions

      And to:

      http://www.shawnwilkerson.com/code/modx-revolution/

...not ’tutorials for totally beginners" but that helps a lot smiley

      Hope this helps you
      Welcome in modx
      cheers

I know this may sound a bit strange but I think I would agree with you @Oldstyle.

I first tried Evolution then loaded Revolution.

I don’t think anyone has really covered that base as yet Revolution is too new.

But I would suggest checking out any of the Evolution Beginners Tutorials eg.
        http://codingpad.maryspad.com/beginner-tutorials/

        Then maybe
        http://bobsguides.com/migrating-revolution.html

I have not seen any *basic Revolution Tutorials*

Hope this can get you started.

It’s a great CMS and an even better community.

Welcome to MODx (Evolution or Revolution).
Hope you enjoy your time here.

          allanb,
It makes me feel a bit more sane to know that I am not alone in my confussion.

I think I am getting on track though and it comes through Bob’s page on "porting" (http://bobsguides.com/porting-your-site-to-modx.html) as he explains about creating a folder in the MODx "Assets" folder for stylesheets, js, images etc. This is the basic stuff that I was refering to. It could be called housekeeping in that you have to know where the mop and brooms are kept before you can start work. If this is not pointed out then I would be spending enormous amounts of time searching top to bottom without success and calling this a huge learning curve.

Sometmes the basics are just too basic for knowledgeable folk, but then, they know where the broom closet is. In MODx Revo beta 5 there is no broom closet and you have to make your own. No one says this.

So far I am pleased to be able to touch in with a friendly community and I have high hopes for the product.

          Thanks

You seem to have found your broom cupboard.

I could have told you you can put your brooms anywhere and I would not have been wrong MODx gives you that flexibility.

I am not sure that would have been much help to get started though.

            Glad Bob’s Guides helped you.

MODx gives you the flexibility to layout your site the way you want all you have to do is reference the file you want.
There are usually more than one way to solve a problem in MODx the choice is yours even if it is not the best practice.

I will say it again plenty of people to help here if you define your problem well.

            The best I’ve seen.

I hope you are progressing well.
