Multi-criteria filtering is definitely a must have since we have much more resources available now

Constructive criticism is always a great contribution, we don’t want to get complacent, lazy or deaf to the suggestions and insight from our community which is one of our greatest asset ;D
We’d like to communicate more about what’s coming but we have to balance with the element of surprise

PatrickSamphire,
That is an excellent request. The reason WordPress can do that is that they have a package manifest for their addons in a standard format. Since MODx 0.9.6x uses plain old php however the developer/creator wants there is no way for your install of MODx to know what you have installed.
I think this is something that is coming in MODx Revolution because there is a new way for distributions of addons and extras to be packaged and therefore there will be a possibility for you to know if you have the latest version. That being said. This is MODx and there are cases where one may want to have multiple versions and multiple installs simultaneously located within a particular project and therefore it may be more difficult for you to manage.
Cheers,
Jay
