Heads up on this MI blog post is showing off some CMS forums, MODx being one.
Some indiscriminate name dropping for MODx couldn’t hurt in the comments thread.
A shameless plug on my part, but mubs won’t mind. wink

One of the comments on this page led to this... just amazing! The site is fantastic, and the service looks awesome. And I don’t impress easily. (check out the video on the What’s Next item)

I have seen Trafik before, it really looks great and has some fantastic features. The only issue I have with it is that it is a hosted service like basecamp, with monthly fees (very affordable in any case). You do not get to upload it to your own environment (as far as I could tell).

The video is a good view even if you are not using trafik, it has some good views on web business.

Here’s what I have so far:

Traffik is a rebranded version of the BusinessCatalyst CMS. This is a part of the BC business model. The BC CMS is explicitly designed to allow for rebranding. It appears that the "direct purchase" model for the BC CMS is through Good Barry (goodbarry.com), but I’m not clear on that.

Based on some job postings and a call to an .ASPX file in the source code, I’d say they write the application in ASP.NET and use MS SQL. I find that interesting, as they liberally use a MAC interface in their marketing (not that MAC is anti-.NET or anything...).

I was considering trying it out, but I’m thinking not at this point, just because I don’t want to deal with the politics of uncontrolled hosting, the incremental charges for additional disk space etc, and the curiosity that the CMS was built to be rebranded.

I do like the MODx product so far, but I think it could "turn the corner" with better documentation (visual examples) and a point-click interface. It kind of depends on what MODx wants to become...

One of the best hosted CMS’ I’ve seen is ecclesia360 / MonkCMS (http://www.monkdevelopment.com/products/). I setup a free account for my church to manage their podcasts through it and the admin interface is just beautiful. It’s expensive tho at around $1500 a pop + monthly fees.

One of my goals in life is to see modx have a content manager like they have (think jqueried / customized frontend document manager)

It’s pretty impressive. I watched the demo of the sermon section and it looks like it could all be done fairly smoothly in MODx (even in 0.9.6). The only difference would be in the steps it takes the user to get to that interface.

Your goal would just be a matter of moving that view to the front end, or customizing the Manager to the point where logging in took certain users directly to that view. I’m not sure how hard that would be in Revo.

It seems like a great strategy to market these custom solutions with a buy-in and a monthly fee. I can certainly imagine spinoffs from MODx that use it as a platform for doing the same thing.
