Since you already have website<->forum intergreation, maybe have the ability to "check" off which snippets/modules/etc. you have installed (so you could get a custom RSS feed or something of the stuff you use, making updating easier). MyBB recently tried out this idea, and it’s really useful, IMO.

That sounds like a usefull feature. Also subscribing to a snippet/plugin from the repository so you get a mail when it is updated would be nice. I know I can subscribe to the support thread on the forums, but that will also give me mails when people ask for support, not only when a new version is released.

Personally I would prefer to have check-update in MODx himself, of such form that when acceding the site administrator, appeared in the initial page a message with the available updates.

Perhaps in so waited 0.9.7 version?

Yes, we’re going to be moving towards a packaging system that will allow add-ons and core extensions to be monitored (auto-update feature), downloaded directly to the server (assuming the environment allows it, falling back to manual download and package extraction), and installed/upgraded from within the MODx manager interface itself. We’ll eventually offer similar functionality for the MODx core, as well.

This does mean add-ons and extensions will need to provide an update site, and likely we’ll extend the existing repository to make it easy for contributors to take advantage of these packaging options.

Just to make sure, the owner will have to press a button/etc. to start the update process (in case the owner made some custom edits to the script), right?

Of course; everything would be user initiated; though you could certainly setup your own cron jobs to automate updates via the API. The packaging system is part of xPDO and creating custom installation scripts, web services, or interfaces will be a very easy (as will creating automated build scripts to create custom packages). The new repository (or independent repositories) would likely provide update watches via RSS feeds and/or web services that provide the latest package information to check against.
