Beginning web fundamentals, did you feel overwhelmed when you started out?

Hmm. Almost makes me want to retire my Smultron editor. This old dog is getting too old (and lazy) to want to learn new tricks

I was hesitant to leave PhpEd after using it for years, but I’ve found that most modern professional editors are similar enough that it’s pretty easy to switch. Getting used to NetBeans took about 20 minutes, and for a while, I switched back and forth between PhpEd, NetBeans, and PhpStorm all the time until I got the debugger working in NetBeans and PhpStorm. It was actually pretty painless, (except for waiting for the Java editors to load).

Yeah, that’s one thing holding me back; this little iBook struggles with what I’ve got. Probably best to wait until I can upgrade to something with a bit more horsepower (i.e. top-of the line MacBook Pro with 8Gb RAM and SSD - anybody need some web development done so I can pay for it? )

I started with web design back when there was NetScape Vs. Internet Explorer
and 3 screen resolutions to battle (640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768).

I’m 50% designer and 50% developer. MODx introduced me to PHP.
Today I rather deal with a PHP challenge than CSS! But still
in order to make it as web designer/developer/architect you have to love
the medium and get a kick for each new thing you can learn.

I’m self-taught and know PHP now better(!) than my cousin who spent years
in school. It’s all about PASSION. Without passion no job is fun.

Any job is alway better than no job, tho.

and you can register at anytime to any of their courses. They cover CSS, Javascript, PHP and ore and they
are fairly priced, some are really quite affordable, for not saying cheap, for what they offer. They do not cover everything
by any means, but they give you a direction, structure and the basics from where you can keep going, and
they are given by very knowledgeable people.

All very valid sources. I have just decided to get into the forum myself but have been dealing with css and php for a while now.
It does get overwhelming in the beginning but is true for any job whether you’re a starting out barista or designer.

Just blowing the dust off this thread for laughs. A lot has changes since the first post. Lets say I'm more busy. LOL

Nice to see that "create a layout and sort of "inject" the management into the site after it's been designed visually" made it into the website language. I still hold this as the number one reason that I enjoy MODx so much.

Really looking forward to reading MODX: The Official Guide.
