This is a fictitious story, about a fictitious firm in a fictitious land.
Once upon a time, in a distant land, a Web Developer was asked to work with a Famous Design Firm. The Developer was naive, and was shocked to find out how little the Firm knew about what they did for a living.
The Developer was not aware that all that mattered was The Look, and nothing else. As long as the magic PSD’s with the Prettiest Colors in the Land were exactly replicated, toil would be over, and the job done!
The firm never, ever viewed their Precious Design on anything but the Magic Mac at 4 billion x 4 billion resolution. They knew nothing about:
- storing data
- SEO
- usability
- accesability
- the browsers other than Safari, which clocked in at 2% of web surfers
- designing pages that would load quickly
- html
- which popular hosting providers really, really, sucked
None of this would have been a problem if the Firm had been willing to lower themselves to speak about their Sacred Design with someone who knew something about some of the above Secret Properties. But the Lofty Orders came from the High Ground, and were not subject to interference from underlings.
The Web Developer was new to the Land of Silliness, and very naive. The Developer was ordered to follow Sacred Principle One. All that mattered was The Look, because that’s what they had used to get the Big Client to sign on the dotted parchment paper. And because the final result was 1 pixel off, the Web Developer was banished to the Land of Code Miscreants, never to be seen again.
