Magento Ecommerce 1.0 Out

The V1.0 Production of Magento ecommerce is out...
I have been following the its development and it looks as this
great new player in the open-source ecommerce arena will be the
new standard... good-bye oscommerce, good-bye zencart...

Magento strikes hard indeed, but it’s not particularly lightweight, and you definitely need control of your server environnement thus RPS, dedicated box or high end shared server are sure a prerequisite... for smaller project I recommend another new player which will hit hard : Prestashop

I’d been testing magento since the first beta. It has come a long way (7 months!) and the Varien is doing an exceptionally great job. It’s amazing that such a powerful eCommerce platform can be born in just 7 months.

The site I have been working on is hosted with Hostgator, it was very slow until the previous beta version 0.917x. I have just finished installed the 1.0. It loads very fast and so far I haven’t encounter any problem others are facing. I do however trimmed many classes out from the default theme and removed many white spaces for client’s site. I think this helps a bit too.

Yep, it works pretty nice in my host too.

For the uninitiated www.mediatemple.net has partnered with Magento for a ONE click installation
of it in their grid.

The grid account is just $20 bucks a month for all these, I will have to give it a try...

my host is mt, I haven’t installed it to my server. May do that one day.

I think the founder of Varien really has a great vision. Magento probably is/will inspire many open source developers. Magento is a great product, and one the eCommerce world desperately beg for, many companies, developers probably will not release it as open source considering so much money and resources needed to bring the product to live. I think this is the greatest vision of Roy Robin - the company is absolutely going to make more money by releasing Magento to open source community, build a strong reputable brand working with program (training) vendors and third-parties providers, and continue attract people like me who loves open source software for whatever reason - one of the main reason I go for open source is because it’s free for me to try out:)

I hope Modx can and will find a model that works for everybody’s benefit and the developers of Modx make lots of money

Thanks for the heads up on PrestaShop davidm, it’s great to see there’s some real development in the eCommerce world since the ZenCart and osCommerce ofthe early ’00s ( ). Yeah, I’ve been watching Magento for quite a few months and it’s funny because we were talking about it at work yesterday in relation to a job, wondering when it would make 1.0.

PrestaShop looks like a osCommerce clone, down to the all-too-familiar create an account or login before checkout. What’s the story behind it?

I can’t tell you exactly, I discovered Prestashop thanks to Laurentc, but it doesn’t look like an osCommerce clone to me at least in one regard : separation between content and presentation. In other terms, it’s templatable and it’s been one major issue of most e-commerce platform.

Now I can’t tell you if you can override the "create an account or login before checkout", did not test it thourougly yet... it’s on my todo list though...

I agree with Ryan... it seems to be a nice looking-ajaxified oscommerce(zencart)!
Has the same structure, though nicer designed, the same modules, the same way
of inputing products and categories, etc.... nothing that revolutionary...
except... again... nice design and ajax use...

we will have to try it more in depth to have a good comparison with Magento...

I remember someone posted a comparesion on PrestaShop and Magento on Magento forum.
