Asta la Vista baby!

Wasn’t sure whether this was flame-bait or not but here goes!

So I buy a shiny new lap top running Vista home premium mainly so I can keep an eye on how ie7 is running my sites. I think ’well this isn’t bad I’ll try and do a bit more’. So I try a MODx installation - download latest version, extract files to the right location, wait 3 hours and 50 minutes!!! Ok so I’ll extract the files where they are and then move them - 3 hours 50 minutes!!! Something wrong surely? Apparently not! Having searched and read through various discussions this is a known issue! I read through 39 pages of discussions on the mi*****ft forums and still no definitive answer.

Now if anyone does have a definitive answer as to how to resolve the problem of moving files in Vista then I would genuinely like to hear the answer (please not a ’hotfix’).

On my mac the whole process of downloading the zip and getting MODx installed takes around 15 minutes.

I’ve seen this problem on one of the Vista installs I’ve done recently - couldn’t get anything to work, extracting a 9kb compressed folder took over 10 minutes. The only solution I found was to reinstall Vista, which isn’t an ideal solution at all.

I dual boot my desktop machine between Linux and Vista. I can un-archive MODx in Linux in about 1.5 seconds, while in Vista it takes about 30. I have no idea what Vista is doing when it comes to processing files - it seems completely bizarre. I haven’t tried a 3rd party app for un-archiving in Vista yet though. My fav from XP, which I found to be the fastest archiver I’d ever used, was 7-zip. I think I’ll check it out in Vista.
It makes me wonder if OpenGeek was using Vista when he wrote that creating the transport package for a MODx097 install should take a few minutes (it’s a php command that archives a bunch of files). It takes less than 4 seconds every time for me, under Linux.

From what i gather from the various theories a couple of things stand out. Vista maybe tries to create a thumbnail for each item or windows defender is checking each item.

But come on surely with something as ’sophisticated’ as Vista this stuff should be ironed out well prior to release.

Yeah, like that will ever happen At MS (and most other places as well) you pay to be beta testers.

It’s not an HP laptop by any chance? I had an HP HDX 9000 with Vista Ultimate Edition that took forever to do some of the simplest file operations (and often gave no indication that they were happening until it was finished). I sent it in for repair for a bad web cam and after two months of complaining and an e-mail to the CEO, they sent me a new HDX 9200 with 3 gig of memory to replace it. It’s *much* faster and I can do a MODx install in a reasonable amount of time.

Running transport.core.php from inside my editor (PhpEd) never takes more than 30 seconds.

It’s an Acer laptop - nothing wrong generally with the speed of operations - this is definitely a Vista issue.

Nope; I use 7-zip myself, I just have a crappy processor and not enough memory. And I only have three flavors of XP (Pro, MCE 2005, and Tablet Edition) plus a CentOS box here; and as of tomorrow, I will have OS X on a new laptop. Vista made it easy to decide to switch.
