To Mac users : your take on Leopard upgrade ?

I couldn’t agree more, sometimes it’s frustrating seeing less than 1 Gb being used when you have 4 Gb, especially when the system uses swap files when it shouldn’t need to...

About Parallels, yes I have noticed too, but most of it works which is not bad...

Another topic entirely but the main glitch I suffer from is issues with external drives : trouble unmounting via Finder (works with Disk Utility luckily), some permission issues and drive issues which Leopard can’t fix (and Tiger says : no problem with the drive probably something to do with the Time Machine feature I guess...).

I have some more data to provide about this memory usage, and it’s from the excellent review from arstechnica (a must read !) :

The Leopard virtual memory system is better about determining which pieces of memory are actually being used by your application right now and which are safe to swap out to disk. When it comes time to swap to disk, Leopard will (finally!) dynamically allocate swap files, which means that you should get some disk space back when the memory pressure abates.

I’ve had overally good experiences to date with leopard. Definitely seems snappier and the little touches you find along the way are just awesome. A much more polished experience over all.

Mail and Time Machine are worth the price of admission ... as is the performance boost in Spotlight. Searching in mail is almost as good as Gmail now! And the data detectors ... just incredible for creating new contacts and events very intelligently.

With that said, at this juncture I’d wait until 10.5.1 is out, which looks like it’ll be any day now. Rumors have it complete and ready to drop into software update imminently.

And it’s there, just did the 10.5.1 update and I must say things run even faster, my iMac flies !!!

I have to check the changelog now, and also for the annoying Disk Utility issues... but my guess is, this time Leopard is ready for prime time !!!

I plan on waiting for 3-4 months. I love Mac products but have noticed their first releases usually have problems. My intel macbook fan has gone out twice. They fix it but it takes a few days to turn it in, get it fixed, etc. So I’ll let em get the kinks worked out and such first.

Well, I can understand but I think 10.5.1 is ready for prime time now !
I have had 3 Macs and no issue with hardware so far (fingers crossed)

Well, for me the performance gain is even bigger than the nice new features (like Time Machine : really great and useful day to day)

Memory is better used, and with 4GB I really can feel the difference, no need to check load times it’s really 20 maybe 35% faster ! My computer uses 3/4 of my RAM while it only used 2/5 before and it’s only natural that it runs faster.

Yes I’d say it’s worth it...
