I have decided to resell the MacBookPro 17" I got last year, before its price goes down to much. I mainly use it for desktop and it’s heating quite a bit... Since I am selling it, I decided to part with the 23" cinema display and go for a new iMac + a MacBook on the side.
I was undecided about the 20" or 24" : I don’t have a big appartment therefore not a big desk and working with the 23" was not always optimal considering the distance between me and my screen. I have read a
lot of
bad stuff about the 20", especially about the display. Of course the glossy screens are controversial, but Apple’s choice regarding the 20" has been somewhat shot down to flames on Apple’s support forum and almost everywhere on the web. Washed out colors, gradient issues and impossible calibration were among the things I read.
I got a look at the store, had a chance to calibrate the screen and check the gradient issue with the salmon color. No issue on the test machine. I decided I’d go for it and buy one, and if there was a problem use the 14 day period and switch with a 24". But I think I won’t have to. It’s a glossy screen - not everyone will like it - but I have a model which doesn’t seem to suffer from the uneven light/colors. Of course it’s not properly calibrated out of the box, but neither was the 23" cinema display. Once calibrated you get a very decent display (even if, glossy is not the best to work with colors but that’s another issue).
Display aside, I have boosted the thing with 4Gb RAM and it runs quite smooth I have no complaints
And compared to the MacBook Pro, it runs MUCH cooler (35°C average against 65°C average with the MBP !). Also, I ran the firewire target mode to transfer my data and settings from the MBP, it’s just an amazing feature really ! Just like cloning a machine with no hassle
Anyone has an experience to share about the new iMac 20" ?
With Vista, it comes handy
