Does anyone here use OpenOffice?

Just curious...

I’m on Linux mostly... I’ve got a XP/Pro partition running
in Parallels (virtualization software), which was a great move.

Anyway, to get back OT, since I’m on Linux I’m using OpenOffice.
Which has been great, although not perfect.
I liked it that someone put up the documentation in ODF format.

So that made me wonder, if there are other people here using it.

I use the Mac version, NeoOffice. It’s a bit slow and heavy, but with enough memory on my iBook it is acceptable. Although about all I use it for is to open the .doc files people insist on giving me.

I use OpenOffice too. Susan, why do you prefer NeoOffice over Openoffice?

Since OpenOffice 2 was released, I have shelved the MS Office software altogether (last version I bought was Office 2000). I have yet to run into an Office document (Word/Excel/PowerPoint) that I couldn’t open, even with macros; though to be fair, I don’t deal with a lot of documents with custom macros.

I use OpenOffice I itry to spread the word (like I do with Firefox) because I find that 80% of users can work with a TunderBird/OpenOffice combo with 0 (zero) difference.

And it has a fantastic "Export to PDF" button... what we need other than that?

I use the entire suite of OpenOffice - darned if I’m going to pay M$ $400+ for Orifice pro 2007 when OOo works just as good for $0. There are really nice quick reference cards for the entire suite available from www.cluesheets.com that answer most how-tos.

Why run the overhead of X-windows to run a slightly slow and heavy OpenOffice, when you can run the slightly slow and heavy NeoOffice natively? Although I do often have X-windows open anyway for the GIMP.

I use OpenOffice for all my work of that kind at home, and MSoffice at work (because of buiseness-regulations).

Susan; I wondered why OOo takes so long to load. I didn’t realize it was running under X windows/ I’ll give Neo a try.

For those who find Open Office slow to start or using too much memory: are you aware of tweaks like turning off java, and changing the memory usage settings?
