Not to discredit Wordpress, just to a) maybe inform somebody using it who might have otherwise missed it, and b) alert the MODx team to such nefarious goings-on. I’m sure somebody would love to sneak in and "upgrade" our download packages for us.

It did. It sucks. And it can happen to any project, so it’s all the reason to be uber-vigilant about who has access to what. All it takes is one disgruntled person to wreck havoc as what appears to have happened with WP. That’s pure speculation of course.
