Install under Ubuntu

Just installed Ubuntu 6.10 Server and am having difficulty with permissions for ModX.

Anyone able to help?

New to Linux, in general, so please take it slow

Assuming you are installing a brand new site, this is what you should do in your MODx root folder:

### before installing

# set the cache folder rwx to everyone
chmod 777 assets/cache

# set the cache files rw to everyone
chmod 666 assets/cache/site*

# set the image folder rwx to everyone
chmod 777 assets/image

# set the export folder rwx to everyone
chmod 777 assets/export

# change the name of the config file, if you haven’t done it already.
mv manager/includes/config.inc.php.blank manager/includes/config.inc.php

# set the config file rw to everyone
chmod 666 manager/includes/config.inc.php

### after installing

# set the config file rw only for you, r for everyone else.
chmod 644 manager/includes/config.inc.php

# delete the install folder, if you haven’t done it already.
rm -rf install

That should work.

You rock! Went smooth except for the rename, due to config.inc.php.blank not existing but the ModX team had a note about new Linux installs needing to create a empty config.inc.php file on one of the test pages so no problems.

Could you explain the difference of chmod’ing in terminal and using the file properties in Gnome? I am almost positive that I set them correctly from there the first time but I couldn’t get anything but assets/cache to pass.
Scratch that. As I typed that I realized that I hadn’t changed the file permissions. I had only changed the directory permissions.

Boy, I can’t wait for my Linux books to get here. Going to have a lot of reading to do.

Both chmod’ing in terminal and the file properties dialog in gnome nautilus do the same thing. I just prefer the terminal because it’s a little more flexible.

Just an "old granny’s" tip... I haven’t bought a computer book for over five years. Five minutes with Google can find more articles and tutorials than you can shake a stick at. For example, one of my favorites:

Ah, sottwell. I was planning on asking you for advice on template design, eventually. Hope this doesn’t burn into my allotment.
I understand what you are saying, though. I like having a printed quick reference at hand. I google quite a bit and try to wait before asking questions until times like this when I’ve convinced myself I am doing something correctly but it still isn’t working.
