I couldn’t agree more, just what I said above... better spending a few minutes now than loosing a few hours afterwards

Though I don’t know any personally, I could see a developer who is less than altruistic holding the domain hostage in order to hang on to and bleed an ignorant client. Not a good way to build a business IMHO.

Well I do !
In France it’s common practice from web agencies, who take advantage of small business owner who don’t know a thing about the web (it’s less and less true, but was at some point)... One of the things I emphasize on is : you’re free to go if you don’t like what I do. And it makes them way more confident, especially when they have be "conned" before (I see no other term...).

Works the other way, too... I built a website for a small local bookshop, but never got paid, got an email saying "they weren’t happy with my work". They changed all the passwords, then had the nerve to ask me why it was getting "cannot connect to database" errors. I told them to get their own code and quit using mine if they weren’t happy with it and weren’t going to pay me for it. They eventually apparently got that sorted out. After no luck trying to talk to them, but after more than a month they were still using my code, I finally just moved the domain’s DNS info to another very cheap host, with a page with my phone number. I got a few calls from confused potential customers of theirs, but they never did get back online.
That is an unfortunate situation Susan. They’re so unhappy yet they continue to use it. And they expect you to believe that BS? That is precisely why I do all development work on my server and won’t load the active site on a clients host until after final payment.

I had some misfortune with one client, which still hasn’t payed me and never will... Short story is : either I host my client and control the server, or else I get full payment
before any transfer on their server, period.

I have registerd and moved over 200 domains the only problem in moving is when the curent register data is not correct. this is a big pain, once the domain is moved i can change owner etc on the fly no problems at all.
I normaly register domains on the clients name and adres and have my own as technical contact. that works great for me.
no hassle with papers etc all online register a .com now be online with that name 10 minits later.
