I have a tiled background inside a div, its a 1 pixel high gif that tiles vertically.
My question is more a general one about the pixel and performance with browsers.
1.Is it better to tile vertically using 1 pixel in height
or
2.Is it better to tile a chunk say about 10 pixels in height as it has to tile less if you know what I mean

I believe the answer is 2, the difference in filesize is naff all but the difference in the processing that a browser has to do is.. well it’s a tenfold difference. You may be able to find out the sweet spot if you search the web. It may be that 8px is preferable, for instance.
