We really do need a place to vent lol

There are sometimes when you may feel like running down the street naked with a sign saying "I LOVE MODX" while other times you just want to say every bad word that comes to mind and curse modx to hell he he

I guess that’s what makes Modx so great, its one of those love/hate relationships, you have to earn it baby grin

I disagree, but everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how... etc... etc...

I like MODx, because If something doesn’t work the way I want, the developers docs give a great insight in how to use the API to get my snippets to do whatever I want. And a lot easier than if I didn’t have the MODx API (and its documentation) there to help. It’s so cool, because it does all the basic boring stuff, and I get to focus on coding the fun, active stuff. I looked at my first PHP book in March, never touched PHP before, now I am making modx snippets to do the things I want modx to do for me! MODx works the way I want to work, but it also works the way you want to work. any style you have, MODx seems to work well with. It is crazy. IMHO the best thing that ever happend to the internet since being able to steal music!

        bugsmi0,

It’s been stated 1000 times and here it is again: MODx is not targeted at those that are not coding-inclined types right now. MODx is also not about teaching people how to build CSS sites; it’s a tool to enable those that know the ins and outs of CSS to take advantage of and that is very difficult to find in other projects. Not to mention the idiosyncracies of configuring MODx on IIS servers and some shared servers with "interesting" configurations. Every time those types of support questions are handled on the forums by core team members means there’s another delay in getting it to the state that I would recommend it for non-technical "regular" individuals.

If you don’t fall into those categories, then you should expect frustrations, cause there’s going to be loads of them. If you don’t have a server comparable to Media Temple or Dreamhost, you’ll probably run into issues. It would be helpful to have some real coding experience or at least will look through snippet documentation prior to running off and asking in essence for someone to configure their sites for them, for example. We welcome everyone, but we also ask that folks respect the current state of development.

Peter, while I understand your feeling as a newcomer, but we are patient, hepful, and even more...

I am not sure it’s Trolls popping up, or if there are trolls popping up, it’s in response to some vampires tongue

Time to do some reading (bugsmi0, hint hint...) and do some introspection wink

Introspection goes for us as well, we’re doing to much direct helping sometimes, as the article says :

            Quote from: The
Enforce autonomy. No matter how beneficent you’re feeling, never directly answer a common question. This is the lazy way out, and you only enable the Help Vampires instead of truly helping them. Let the URL to your help resources be your only answer, but tell the vamp you are happy to help if he explores those avenues of self-help and still cannot find an answer.

Now I should carve this on the wall !

            But this is equally true

            Quote from: The
Foster thinking. Even if it’s not a question you see go bye fifty times a day... don’t answer it with a direct fix (unless the person is a known non-vamp, or it’s a real puzzler). Answer with questions to spur (and guide) thought. If the Help Vampire resists thinking or complains, give them the URL for the Resources page and withhold further assistance.

Reward self-help and helping others. Thank people who ask intelligent questions and do research first, and people who make an effort to help others. Tell them they’re a credit to the community. Be especially generous with praise and emoticons for those who are actively reforming their ways. Help is a trickle-down economy.

When your a good samaritan ’giving to much help’ is never a problem. That’s why I don’t consider myself a good samaritan, nor take on the responsibilites of one. I believe in good deeds, and karma - if by some action I do help someone, only goodness can come from it smiley But I’m definately not some cow a vampire would ever wanna suck on - because I "choose" not to be.

Yeah well even if you’re a good samaritan, your energy level (and time) is not limitless... that was my point...

sounds like an easy way out to simply direct a person to 100 pages to read when you can answer their question in a single sentence, its also much easier for an adv web geek to look down on a newbie, i’m not complaining of course grin I’ve been impressed with the assistance on the Modx board, and yes its important to understand the Modx way is not a helpdesk, still a forum is for disussion and comunicating. I do think there’s a smell in the air of adv user ego floating around the "superior complex" he he. There’s only so much reading and resources one can read before they have to ask a question, especially if the documentation may be lacking in some areas or not written in plain english. I would not condem any user for asking any question because we are all newbies on one level or another. i’ve been studying Modx from day one and continue to but that doesn’t mean it will make me better then anyone else. I’ve learned quite a bit already some challenges can be due to the so called "adv users" not communicating in plain english or leaving out really important items in their snippets but i’ve learned to deal with that, it’s all good. Don’t take this the wrong way but none of you are as advanced as you like to think, Modx is Modx its not for adv users and its not for beginners it’s just Modx, it will grow as we do.

                    >>>>sprays the room with fresh flower sense too much adv ego smell tongue

I’m not one of the higher ups, but I think what they are trying to strongly discourage are the stupid questions like "How do I make a navigation menu on my website", or maybe "what is a Chunk?" Or maybe slightly more technical questions, but questions that could still be answered by reading the manual. Of course there are a lot of things that can’t be discerned from the manual such as TV techniques, the proprietary MODx features that don’t exist anywhere else in the world, and the big thing I’m still having trouble grasping ... how those crazy @binding features should be used.

In other words, we would much rather have one budding MODx user over 10 new budding web developers trying to learn the basics of writing HTML/CSS. At least during the beta stages.
