MySQL 5.x and MODx

    I just opted for a dedicated server and also got someone to handle the server’s administration... he’s gonna setup the server tomorrow morning so I ask myself a few questions. One of those questions is... what about MySQL version ? 4.1.x ? 5.x ?

    So far I was on shared hosting with MySQL 4.1 and a few character encoding problems so I was thinking going for PHP5 / MySQL5... do you see any reason why not to ?

      I recommend going with PHP 5.1.x and MySQL 5.0.x -- the performance improvements in the latest versions of both are well worth it in my experience so far. It’s amazingly faster, at least in my local environment; getting performance of 5 to 20 pages per second from the default MODx content using 5.1.1 and 5.0.18, which is close to twice as fast as my 5.0.4 and 4.4.x tests, and typically 3x as fast as running under 4.3.x

        Woah I didn’t know performance was so drastically improved !

        Thanks a lot Jason for the input, I’ll ask the guy to set this up with MySQL 5 and PHP 5 then smiley
        The only thing I still wonder is, are most web apps compatible with those settings ?

          Make sure it’s PHP 5.1.x in all seriousness though, as I think that’s where the speedups come from.

            Well I might need to host some other web applications, who knows ?
            Even though I seem to be using MODx and nothing else lately, I am curious by nature and who knows, I might come accross another great find tongue

            But the question is pretty much aimed at my being able to host Tattoo when the time comes grin

            Thanks, I will, though the guy I hired to take care of the server is as good as it gets : he’ll sure won’t settle for anything but the best there is... his thing is server outsourcing, I’ve know this guy for two years and only heard praise about him, from trusted friends smiley

              Really nice to have php 5.1 - MySQL - 5.0.20, phpMyAdmin - 2.8.0.3 grin
