What about Code Ignite?

Hey guys,

What’s your assessment of Code Ignite, the new effort by Rick Ellis, founder of MODx competitor Expression Engine? From the look of it it seems quite a versatile tool, but I’m no true developer so I can’t really tell. Anyway you find it here: http://www.codeigniter.com/

Have you (including MODx core) developers tried it out yet? Like Ruby-on-Rails it promises development many times faster than normal development – in PHP! Maybe there’s a chance the "18-24 months" Ryan was talking about in another thread could be cut in say... half. That would really be something, wouldn’t it?

That is fairly exciting on initial viewing of the video. I might have to download this to play with it a bit. It’s structure seems very close to that of Rails, but the syntax is much more familiar to me. Thanks for sharing that post!

Very interesting and first I’ve ever heard of it. I love the documentation, and from a quick review, looks to be a very well organized and robust framework. However, I think in the next few days you will see a public 1.0 roadmap for MODx that will push MODx a few notches higher in the PHP framework area... stay tuned.

Rick Ellis certainly has an agenda here, and considering The flexiblity of EE (which is great, I should know since I use it for my blog, but nowhere near MODx IMHO), one would expect Code Igniter to be a nice tool. The videos are carbon copies of those Ruby on Rails demo we all saw (that’s particularly true especially that Code Igniter uses MVC), but with php instead of ruby, which might make Code Igniter a real competitor of Tattoo...

Rick certainly has been smart to have Code Igniter releaser under an opensource licence, unlike EE which is paying software.

Rick is quote a genius in releasing CodeIgniter as open source. It is making me look at EE. If EE had the same framework as CodeIgniter (but with the CMS backend), it would be a great pleasure. This is what brought me to MODx. Of course, EE still doesn’t have the templating flexibility (it seems) as MODx.

The class libraries and helpers in CodeIgniter are an awesome addition tho. (Especially the calendar and forms (with validation) libraries. Is MODx looking at anything like this (kind of like Jason’s MakeTable class)?

eForm and MakeTable can both do this. Calendar isn’t done per se, but Kyle did a blog calendar, so it can’t be far behind.

Hi Chuck,

There are lots of things in store for MODx. In the next release you will be able to easily extend modx using what I call extensions. For example, the new MODx Recursive Parser is just an "extension" to the MODx core. This means that you could create your own version of the parser and use it inside your snippets by executing $modx->loadExtension(’MyParser’).

As for Form validations you could also use Jason’s MakeForm class or the eForm snippet. eForm 1.x does not support client-side validations but that will to be change (along with lots of other things) with the release of 2.0.

Tip: Just remember this equation, eForm + Ditto = Unlimitted Possibilities

Thanks for the update. I guess that was my main question- how is this looking going forward. That sounds very good.

And I’ll remember- Ditto + eForm == unlimited possibilities.
