Always watching on possible competition for MODx, I had this discussion on a french board where I was comparing MODx to other CMS and one guy claimed that he had found a framework named Seagull and he hesitates with MODx (I have made some heavy promoting on various french boards about MODx tongue)

He was telling me he’d probably go for Seagull since it integrates PEAR librairies, also ORM was a big factor for RAD.

I admit my technical skills do not allow me to enter debates about PEAR or ORM. The only thing I’ve heard about PEAR is that it weights down on performance. I don’t know squat about ORM.

I intend to test Seagull as soon as I have a little time and have a comparison handy for future debates. If anyone has tested Seagull or has some ammo to give me, go ahead smiley

    • PHP 4/5 compatible
    • compact core framework with basic CMS and other modules included to get you started
    • ease of use: learning curve not as steep as other frameworks
    • enterprise ready, performance conscious design
    • tight integration with PEAR libraries, great for prototyping complex projects
    • integrated ORM for RAD
    • highly configurable, easy to integrate with 3rd party code
    • community support: the project enjoys participation from a large and active developer community, want the documentation in Chinese, looking for Seagull devs near you?
    • loosely coupled components, use template engine of your choice, output to multiple devices or CLI
    • staying power: started in 2001, the Seagull project has been steadily growing in popularity and now enjoys international recognition

The lock in to the PEAR libraries was what turned me off of Seagull; it felt very "heavy" to me. The code of Etomite/MODx was much cleaner and easier for me to understand. The virtual tree structure of MODx was easy to work with for the multilanguage site I was working on at the time.

        Hi

        Idem.

I cannot use Seagull because i have php 4.4.3

Please use PHP 4.3.0 and above except for version 4.4.x which has changed the implementation of references which, at the time of writing, causes problems with some PEAR libs. Also, it has recently been reported the same reference issues occur with PHP 5.1 beta.

Modx is more "independant" and that’s why I do not want other thing like smarty,Pattemplate in the core code.
