I’m creating a large online store to sell 1,000+ downloadable media files that will probably total over 1 GB. I’ve been using MODx for the last year and am absolutely in love with it. Out of all the eCommerce solutions out there FoxyCart looks like the perfect companion for MODx.

However, my only concern is whether MODx and FoxyCart are the best options for such a large store. Do any of you have any experience setting up a large store (1,000+ items) with MODx and/or FoxyCart?

If not MODx/FoxyCart, what else would you recommend?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I’ve done it myself, and it worked ok. Is it the best solution? I suppose it depends. For the client I did it for it was, but the thing I’d ask is what functionality the store needs, and what store- or product-specific CMS functionality they can’t live without.

What MODx is fantastic at is making things exactly how you want them. What it’s not (at least, Evo, and imo) great at is searching and webusers. We’ve done _lots_ of hard core webuser tweaking and customization and such, but I’ve never done much with searching a MODx site other than integrating Google. Searching’s important for a site with 1000+ products, obviously, so that’d be important. Other things like product comparisons, wish lists, and really robust store backend functionality might lead you to go with a dedicated e-commerce CMS.

One of the oft mentioned options would be to create your own products table, but we’ve never taken that approach, mostly because if you’re going to build something entirely custom it’s just a _lot_ of work, and you lose all the nice things about MODx like Ditto and TVs. What we _have_ done in the past is a custom module to search products, which worked really well. But keeping products as MODx documents just has a ton of benefits.

So if you’re already in love with MODx, I’d give the MODx+FC combo some serious thought, but I’d definitely have a plan for searching, comparisons (if needed), wishlists (definitely possible, if needed), user management (definitely possible, but depending what you need you’ll need to hack them up a little), and admin (possibly just dump from FC into Quickbooks and call it a day?). Fwiw, I would use 3rd party hosted services for user reviews and ratings. Jot’s great for what it is, but it’s easier to use something specific like shopperapproved or powerreviews if you can.

We kind of built FoxyCart with MODx in mind, and we hoped that other CMSs would be at least half-decent enough to work ok with it. Thanks for noticing that it fits well wink
