Not joking ... many young couples head off for dinner, men buy expensive brand name gifts and then expect something late night egg nog at the local pay per hour.
Christmas cake is a tradition based on that back per 70’s most households couldn’t afford the luxury of cake and such so instead of presents parents would buy a cake to share with the family.
Also, the season is not religious in any way.
