In Israel, meat is not cheap, and a 45-year typical American meat-intensive dietary habit is hard to break. I was so broke, and so sick of beans and rice, when I noticed, of all things, that turkey tails are sold very cheaply. So I bought four for about six shekels (that’s about a dollar and a half). Took them home, sharpened up my knife, trimmed off all the skin and fat. That I put in a pot with sliced onion ends, celery ends, and apple cores and cooked down to make "shmaltz", an excellent cooking butter subsitute. The tails I then rolled in seasoned flour, browned, then simmered in a bit of water with some herbs from my little garden and the last few drops of red wine I had, for about two hours, turning occasionally, until they were tender. Delicious with rice and some stir-fried cabbage and grated carrot! Gourmet-class meals for next to nothing! Next spring I am determined to make myself a solar oven.

I ate fried fish tails as a child. (seriously, it was one of those things my grandparents did along with pigs feet and other such "culinary delights")
