Windowing system for the new Manager?

Hi, take a look at x-Desktop:

It looks really cool, and powers the beta version of eGroupWare (you can find a demo here: http://www.egroupware.org/)

That does look very cool! It would be great to have something similar to this in the next manager but the fact that this does not support Safari or Opera means that we probably won’t be able to use it for MODx. One of the goals we are shooting for is to be as cross-browser friendly as possible (notice the first paragraph of our features page).

We’ll have to keep an eye on it. If the browser support base grows wide enough then I’m sure we could find a lot of good uses for something like this.

Well, Opera 8.5 seems to work fine...but cool as this would be, you’re right: cross-browser friendliness comes first.

Well maybe Safari works now too. I was looking at their site and it does look like their support information is a bit out of date (mentioning a 7x Opera release).

A note to Konqueror / Safari users: We do respect the work of the Open Source community, especially the K-Teams. However we did not have the time to dig too much into why Konqueror does not work as the others. But because Mozilla 1.x does work and comes with most Linux boxes, we focused on development of the supported browsers, rather than finding the key issues of this problem.

A note to Opera fans: Unfortunately the css and javascript support of all current versions does not allow many operations we do need (like dynamic clipping etc.) We did hope that the upcoming Opera 7.x version can be included as well. But so it is not the case.

Uhm.. I think their project is starving...

Anyway, FF is the most standard-compliant browser, and I do believe that other browsers can only improve their compatibility with new versions.

Do you think it would be possible to create a further "windowed" manager layout? (don’t forget that the current "drop-down menu" layout works only in IE). It doesn’t seem difficult to obtain, and it would be frameless. Just imagine: the Document Tree in a window, the Menu in another element (like the Windows "Start" menu); and every time an user selects a menu command, a new window pops up with the selected action. In this way, it could be possible to edit many pages at the same time, to easily copy-and-paste text between pages etc. Furthermore, the windowing system supports message passing, so it would be possible, for instance, to trigger an update of the tree when a page is saved.

The last announcement in the forum was on Oct 31st 2004.

Unless they have a very major,unannounced, update coming soon I think we can safely say this project is dead. A shame, but it happens.
