Being an ex-employee of Best Buy, I will say that after reading this article I would have to favor Best Buy over this guy. I’ve seen customers get really irate with employees...even when these employees are really trying hard to help them. Definitely not cool for any customer to loose their temper...certainly doesn’t help matters. Now...about that computer...
It’s true what the manager said in the article. When I worked there, it was mandatory for us to offer customers a basic setup with every computer purchase. Basically all this meant is that we open the box, take the computer out, turn it on and make sure it boots up. Simple as that. This ensures a couple of things:
- The customer is indeed getting the same computer they payed for (same model, no wooden blocks!)
- The computer can bootup and there isn’t a problem with the software.
Virtually every computer box I’ve seen is sealed with tape and we were required to check each and every computer box that was unsealed before letting them leave the store for the very reasons that this article points out. In otherwords...if you, the customer, refuse to allow a service technician do a basic setup on your newly bought computer then you are more or less on your own the minute you leave the door. At that point, it would be between you and the manufacturer on why you received a bunch of wooden blocks. Ten to one says this guy was trying to hose the store for a $1300 laptop! Been there...bought the soundtrack!
