Mine is the HP 4700 iPAQ. It comes with the Wifi detection automatice when I turn of Wifi or Bluetooth feature using the manager.

It will tell me what available in the neighborhood and what kind of encryption is use or not use.

It is a great little device for me to carry around to keep in touch with my "net" community!
          • Just be careful, you can get arrested for using an open wireless connection.

I am talking about using Wifi at the public place not at the private resident.

I am using it mostly in the Mall.

I want to say that many Wifi is encrypted but many are open especially in the mall and food area so that people like me go there get something to eat and hop on the net while I am eating. I think that is very good service in my view.
              • Yes, it’s good there are public places with the service. But at random places in parks, in cafes or on the street, it could be trouble if you end up on somebody’s unsecured private network. It’s true, the people in the articles were deliberately looking for unsecured private networks; common sense should be sufficient.

Yesterday I had a dinner at a restaurant and they have a little sign "Free Wifi" and I ask the waitress to provide the information and when she handed me the instruction it shows you how to scan for their Wifi service without encryption.

More and more I start to discover many cafe, restaurant, maill, foodcourt, airport, etc are providing Wifi service for free.

I am very likly to come back to that restaurant again next time with my iPAQ!

PS: I also want to mention that our local library here is also provide Wifi service for anyone that bring in their own laptop or iPAQ.
