PHP editor software recommendations

Smultron can run a file’s content through Markdown... now there’s an interesting feature. I think it’s playtime!

I had tried Smultron a while back but stuck with TextMate... it seems though that Smultron has evolved since I tested it, downloading it right now and will give it a second try

In this thread, does "PHP Editor" mean simply a text editor (with, say, PHP highlighting etc) or something that actually integrates with a PHP interpreter for running/debugging/profiling the code?

I’m quite happy with "vi" as an editor (yeah, yeah, no laughing) but it sure would be nice to have a debugger..

If you don’t mind forking out a few dollars try PHPEdit from http://www.waterproof.fr/products/PHPEdit/

I’ve been working with it from before it went commercial (which p’d me off to no end at the time). A bit quirky but with excellent code highlighting, debugging and real-time syntax checking and a host of other nifty features such as code hints for your own functions.

I looked at the website for the PHPEdit product and couldn’t work out whether it uses a "built-in" PHP interpreter or whether you can "point it" to the PHP interpreter on the server that I use... sometimes I find subtleties with how the server is configured that affect the code.. (eg magic quotes sort of stuff)

PHPEdit installs its own internal processor and debugger, but you can also set it to use another server (via http).

If only it had multi-line search and replace...

I actually find it a little slow to launch for my taste also; it’s about the same in terms of features and overall loading and response time as Zend Studio.

Sorry for waking an "old" thread, i just wanted to hear if someone has any experience with Komodo IDE 4.0.
Ive looked a bit at the trial version, and it seems to be good. But i think that more of you have experience with PHP editors.

I’ve been using Eclipse with the PHP Development Tools and Subclipse plugins for a while now. After trying so many others (Zend Studio, PHPEdit, etc) I forced myself to really sit down and learn Eclipse. Once you get over the initial hump and really learn how to use it you’ll find that it’s as good as any of the others out there. Best of all...it’s free! Gotta love open-source!

I don’t know much about Komodo...but it does look a little like Eclipse though. Plus, $300 vs free? Umm...I personally would give the free one a full run before sinking $300 into something that may not be much better. That’s just my 2 cents!
