Hi all - hope I hit the right category for this post ...

Regarding upgrading, and with Evo 103 out this is now due again, I have a general question for MODx’ers: How many of you charge clients for upgrading?

I never know whether this is ethical as a client has already paid me to work on a product in good faith (even though that product was technically ’free’ in the first place) but which now needs upgrading with the added warning that there are security loopholes in previous versions.

I have previously heard a client team member complain that the product should be secure in the first instance, and I see that point, but I have also pointed out that we are not dealing with a static medium - etc. (this client happened to be a windows user, so I mentioned Service Packs etc)

So, i now have a number of sites to upgrade which takes time ... maybe an annual fee for general site maintenance should be included in a quote, which could cover either 1 or 10 upgrades - any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance

I offer upgrades and other security updates based on annual fee.

Not all of my clients are willling to pay the annual fee although I always clearly state that they are taking deliberate risk. For those clients I offer upgrades with higher prices (hourly rate) and won’t upgrade automatically.

Thanks for that Lammikko, sounds very logical.
