      Hi sally

In my previous work I did some work on sending alarms using text messages(SMS) over Mobile(Cell) phones.

If this is ultra critical I would advise against it. Sometimes took over 4 hours to get message and even sometimes never arrived.
It depends on your service provider.

I could not find a way at the time without using a Mobile Modem I used a Falcon.
This needed a SIM card and either a SMS contract or pre-paid.

I was able to talk to the modem through Visual Basic passing the necessary parameters to the VB function.
The Function could have been written in C++ or C# and where available on the net.

The newer Mobile Modems are USB but I would not know off hand how you would do this as you need to send and receive serial data from a USB port.

If PHP can call functions from other languages and pass the required info ie. mobile no = 555-777-9999, message = ’What you will" limited to 168 characters if I remember correct then it should be possible.

Prewritten free software was available at the time am going back 6 years ago but not for PHP only VB and C++ and JAVA this used the RS232 interface.

Looking on the internet there seems a lot of alternatives today.

      Hope this helps
      Allan

There are things like this :- http://www.mutube.com/projects/open-email-to-sms/gateway-list/ so you send your email to a service provider which routes it as an SMS text message to your mobile number. I’ve looked at this breifly in the past and has no joy with it, I think your best bet is to see what if anything your service provider provides.
Use MODx, or the cat gets it!
