Sorry my previous post was confusing. Don’t worry, it’s not too difficult at all.
RTE: Rich text editor - these sorts of things
http://ckeditor.com/demo,
http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/examples/full.php. They allow you to edit page content without seeing any html. MODx defaults to TinyMCE, although you can install others. FCKEditor is an RTE too.
MCPuck: The file manager that is connected to TinyMCE. This allows you to upload files to the server and insert/add links to them into your page.
Assuming you have TinyMCE and MCPuck installed (you probably do) and are running MODx Evolution (you probably are), this is basically, step by step, to upload a PDF and link to it from a page.
- Type the text that you want to turn into a link into the TinyMCE editor and select it
- Click the Insert/edit link button in the toolbar or the right-click menu
- In the popup that appears, click the ’Browse’ icon to the right of the ’Link URL’ field
- In the new popup you should see a list of files on your site. At the top left there is a dropdown menu that allows you to choose between various upload areas: make sure you have files selected for the moment. To upload your pdf, click the ’Browse...’ button at the bottom to find it on your computer. In some browsers, such as Google Chrome, this button may say something like ’Choose a file’.
- When you have selected a file, click the ’Upload’ button at the bottom right.
- The file will upload and then appear in the list of files above. Click on its icon and the popup will disappear, leaving you with something like ’assets/files/document.pdf’ in the ’Link URL’ field of the original popup.
- Click the green ’Insert’ button.
- Save the page.
If you now visit the page, you should now see the link to the pdf and it will open if you click on it.
Good luck!
