I’m new to MODx. I’m finding it incredibly difficult to find some documentation to get started. There seems to be 3 versions currently doing the rounds - 0.9.x, Evolution and Revolution. When I look at some of the existing tutorials they use terminology (such as Manage Documents) which seems to be inconsistent with what I see in the Evolution UI (Manage Elements).

The first thing I need to understand is how to pull in your own pages and use them as templates. From what I can gather MODx is very flexible in this area and is supposed to make it easy to use your own designs and not be restricted to templates (like with Joomla and Drupal). But the tutorials I have seen so far which talk about this don’t seem to be geared towards Evolution.

Can anyone suggest what’s the best way to get started? So far I don’t even understand how to pull in my own web site to replace what’s there by default from the initial MODx install. I’m tempted to buy the MODx book "MODx Web Development" by Antono John Solar, but I’m worried that it’s going to be geared around an old version and therefore be just as confusing as the rest of the stuff I’ve found.

How do you get started with this thing?

The terminology is being tightened up (in web-speak, "resources" are what you request through your browser; URL = Universal Resource Locator) so "documents", images and any external files that are requested individually via links of any kind (this includes src= attributes of javascript tags, among others) are called Resources. Since snippets, templates, etc aren’t technically speaking web resources, but are elements used by MODx to generate the page (resource) requested, they are now call Elements.

Other than that, there is no major difference in functionality between 0.9.6 and 1.0 Evolution.

          This might help, also: http://bobsguides.com/porting-your-site-to-modx.html

There are only two current versions of MODx, Evolution 1.0.2 and Revolution 2.0.0 (still in Beta, but very solid and hopefully available soon as RC1).
