    back story...
    client called saying website has errors and nothing works. nothing was done on his side or mine. looks like host updated to php 5.3.

    that error client was seeing was
    Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: SAFE MODE
    Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 32840 is not allowed to
    access /tmp owned by uid 0 in
    /home/***/public_html/manager/includes/config.inc.php on line 60

    i got past the first error my removing the php.ini files i had in public html dir.

    i then got this error when going to any page with phpthumb calls.

    Fatal error: session_start() [<a
    href=’function.session-start’>function.session-start</a>]: Failed to
    initialize storage module: files (path: ) in
    /home/hollywoo/public_html/manager/includes/config.inc.php on line 60

    i dont remember now what i did to get rid of this error.

    modx was at9.6.2 so i thought if i updated to the latest version it may fix things.

    though for some reason my host also turned on magic quotes, which screwed up my ditto tpl chunk that was calling php thumb. when i was trying to edit it some to see whats going on.

    host provider said to turn it off in the php.ini which putting a php.ini in the /home/username/ dir didn’t do anything this morning but once home tonight it was turned off. think host changed a setting but never emailed me back if they made a change.

    now i’m getting these errors, in my error log

    [16-Mar-2010 23:09:00] PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE, expecting T_STRING or T_VARIABLE or T_NUM_STRING in /home/hollywoo/public_html/assets/snippets/ditto/classes/phx.parser.class.inc.php(303) : eval()’d code on line 86
    [16-Mar-2010 23:09:00] PHP Warning: Unexpected character in input: ’\’ (ASCII=92) state=1 in /home/hollywoo/public_html/assets/snippets/ditto/classes/phx.parser.class.inc.php(303) : eval()’d code on line 52
    [16-Mar-2010 23:09:00] PHP Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_ENCAPSED_AND_WHITESPACE, expecting T_STRING or T_VARIABLE or T_NUM_STRING in /home/hollywoo/public_html/assets/snippets/ditto/classes/phx.parser.class.inc.php(303) : eval()’d code on line 86

    i’m not sure how to go about fixing this.

    i have another client site with the same host using phpthumb, and no issues here.. http://jewelrybyharlow.com/

    i’m at a loss after 8h of trying to get my clients site to work again properly.
    http://hollywood-furniture.com/products/Bedrooms.html?start=20 is a link to the page.

    i have updated phpthumb’s files with the latest fix for php 5.3 changed the phpThumb.config.php more times than i can count, and at a loss as to where to keep digging.

      You need a php.ini file in every directory that has a script running. This means in the average MODx installation you need one in your web root (to handle the main index.php) and one in the /manager directory (to take care of the manager’s index.php). If you don’t have it in the manager directory, the extra / will get saved into the database whenever you save anything from the Manager. Turning it off won’t fix anything you’ve already done; you have to edit the offending item again and remove the / (or do it directly in the database).

        i had php.ini files in those locations before. having those in there gave me errors

        Warning: session_start() [function.session-start]: SAFE MODE
        Restriction in effect. The script whose uid is 32840 is not allowed to
        access /tmp owned by uid 0 in
        /home/***/public_html/manager/includes/config.inc.php on line 60

        that php.ini file only had register_globals off in it. if there is an example of what my php.ini should have would be awesome.

        once i renamed these php.ini files the error above went away then the site would at least load.

        in talking to the poor hosting customer support person that hung up on me while asking why my cpanel error log didn’t show anything. he said they didn’t make any changes and running php 5.0.?

        think i may have found a bit of something.

        looks like in my plugins for phpthumb and my snippet i had done a save while the magic quotes was on as the extra / were in there. made changes, double and triple checked every plug, snippet and chunk, all are correct now.

        though when going to a page that calls phpthumb site just goes white, and nothing happens. grr.

          These individual php.ini files should ONLY have the directives that are needed to override the settings in the default php.ini file. It sounds like yours had a bunch of settings that you didn’t want.

            the only thing my php.ini files had was register_globals off

            then for some reason my host had issues with it.

            after checking all my phpthumb entrys in modx, i found 2 that were not changed since the magic qoutes issue changed them. once changing those, and checking my phpthumb.config again the defualt file had the // Function for generating hashed calls to phpThumb if ’high_security_enabled’ uncommented.

            why i got the white screen i guess. commented this and everything works yay. so much time lost due to this magic quotes thing. thanks very much sottwell for the help!

            issue solved.
