When I upload an image through file manager, I get the thumbnails when I look for the images. Is there a way to create thumbs for the images that were uploaded through ftp?

You may have to create these manually (yuck), or employ a Snippet to do it. There are a number of tutorials for the GD library that show how to make thumbnails using PHP, but it seems like there should be an easier way... maybe you can tie into the API that the TinyMCE editor is using to make the thumbnails?
hmm, I might try phx-thumbs if I have some time.
instead of looking for the .thumbnail_ file, just use the image.php etc.
I have read some of the forum posts on phx-thumbs and it seems like there is a ton of confused chatter about getting this to work easily.
Having a script create the thumbs can be a blessing or a curse.
A lot depends on the sizes and shapes of your full size images. If all your full size images have been custom cropped for content then your thumbnails can look really odd if a script is doing the work. Some of my galleries have a mixture of verticals, horizontals, squares, and VERY shallow panoramics. The generated thumbnails that Maxigallery and other scripts creates can produce very awkward looking rows and columns as a result. Using an automated script to create a fixed sized thumbnail can neaten up the rows and columns but some of the crops can also look very awkward (chopping a face in half etc).
One way to fix this is to make your own thumbnails. I have pre set my Photoshop crop tool to a certain size and then custom crop each full size image exactly the way I want the thumbnails to appear. You can append the names of the these custom thumbnails and simply replace the automatically generated gallery thumbnails with them by locating the correct folder in the gallery folder contained in the assets folder. This is extra work for sure but your thumbnails will look their best this way.
This may not be that important to you though. You might have too many images or not have the necessary graphics tools. Some guys are more comfortable with getting stubborn scripts to work than they are with Photoshop etc. In the end you have to pick your poison I guess...
Good luck!
I usually use fast stone for my batch image processing, and it’s easy and quick for most of the stuff.
but I want the thumbnails to show up in the content browser, so I’m not concerned about how well they are cropped, but that they are recognizable
thanks for the comments, they are appreciated
the thing is is that I want to have the thumbs accessible when I’m adding pictures that were uploaded throguh my ftp client. That way I wouldn’t have to upload them one-by-one to see what the images are.
currently I run the images through faststone to batch resize and rename before uploading.
I just realized that the folders in question did not have write allowed, once I changed that the images got their thumbnails automatically.
ooopsies...
