I am migrating a lot of articles from an old website and I was wondering how I can manually change the created/published dates to match those of the original website? e.g. set an article’s created/published date to 21 June 2006.
You can change the ’created on’ date using Doc Manager (Modules > Doc Manager > Other Properties > Set Document Dates). Whether that’s OK for you may depend on what you mean by "a lot"

You can also do this directly with the db management tool (ie: phpmyadmin). Another option may be to use the Fast Content CSV plugin that will allow you to set the dates when importing the pages. This might be a good way to go.
