Is ModX suitable for a user content driven site?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently trying to pick between ModX and Drupal as my CMS of choice. I have installed and briefly tried both and I have been doing a ton of reading to get a better understanding of the ups and downs of each. I really like modX from the little that I’ve seen and all that I’ve read it seems like a great CMS. However, I have some concerns...

First, I’ll start by explaining what my intentions are for my site. In short, I’d like to create a site that allows for every user to post content. How easily can modX be setup to allow every user to create a certain content type?
I then, would like to have a voting system for each user created content object. Perhaps similar in fashion to a site like Digg, but not quite the same.

I know HTML/CSS and am willing to learn PHP or whatever I would need to set up a voting system like this.

I realize with modX, I would probably have to develop a snap-in myself for a voting system. Drupal, I’m guessing, has probably already had someone create something of this nature. I have also read that "Drupal is the way to go for community driven sites" which I’m not exactly sure what to think of. Why?. Why would modX not fit the bill here?

You could certainly achieve it in MODx with some effort, but Pligg seems to have a pre-built solution for exactly the application you describe.

You can do this with MODx, but I would say Drupal is a better fit in view of what you’re trying to accomplish. Like Ryan said, Pligg works well too, but I am more familiar with Drupal and you mentioned that you’re trying to choose between the two. My recommendation would be Drupal.
