The short version is that I goofed. It was not an issue with MODx that bit us, but our not keeping the forum software up to date, which if you’re reading this online you’ll notice we’ve now updated and haven’t put our original skin back. That’ll be fixed soon enough only to be replaced again in the near future with a new skin again to go with our new marketing site.
There’s no excuse really; I convinced myself we’d be ready to migrate to the new server and the upgrade would happen at that time. We weren’t and time went by with me forgetting about it. Morale of the story: do as I say, not as I do! Always keep your software up to date and always keep your server properly secured.
The good news is that now the upgrade is done and the database has been migrated. The bad news is that it took the better part of a day on the old box who’s time has unquestionably come up for replacement. We took the main site off simply to give MySQL more resources to update and alter tables with millions of records for SMF (search index). For those that are curious, we got bit by the avatar upload hack and we thankfully caught it before much could go horribly awry save for some very inconvenient down time.
As the project co-founder I apologize for creating some concern and inconvenience, and take full responsibility for what happened. We’re revising the rules by which we run the project and should have a better remediation plan in place in the event that a similar problem occurs in the future. Thanks for understanding and for being a key part of what makes MODx, MODx.
