Malcolm, MODX U or MODX College will be a reality, however, a lot has happened in 2013 to delay our plans. Coincidentally, these relate to Themes, believe it or not. YJ TSO will be heading up MODX U/College and is currently working in the theme space.
Daniel, you're welcome to build a marketplace website, however, there is a bit of an initiative for a MODX Marketplace at modx.com that would follow a similar model to GooglePlay or the Apple App Store.
