Commercial and Non-Commercial License

Hi,
Does anyone know what is exactly the difference between Commerial and Non-Commercial License? I am talking about Open Source in general, not about MODx License.

I always find explainations that I do not fully understand, because of the usual "lawyer language" they use.
I would like a clear example, like this: is a standard web-agency website considered commercial? yes? no? why?
Is a portfolio website commercial? Is a website without adverts commercial? Is a website that does not sell goods, commercial?

If you’re showcasing your art portfolio (but not with the intention of selling them), you are non commercial.

If you run a web agency you are commercial, as your goal is to make money. If you’d use some script which is non commercial, it should be used by /licensed to the end client - if you’d "sell" it, that would be against a non commercial license..

This is my experience too. I think figuring that part out is easy compared to choosing from all the different options. Software licensing is complicated. I think a website with no Marketing Ads is still a commercial site as long as it retails something.

It depends. Sometimes "Non-commercial" means that you cannot do any commercial use of the component. Sometimes, it can mean that you cannot resell it or integrate it in a commercial product.
In case of doubt, the best is to contact the developer(s).

With free web hosts, "non commercial" mean that you cannnot be hosted as a company.

Open source and Commercial are two different things.
As its says, Open Source simply means that you can see the code (and maybe edit it).

Open source does not involve "non commercial" and reciprocally "commercial" does not necessarily mean "closed source".
