hope I posted this in the correct area, I have a question for those of you who may have run into this.
I have a new client and as always I have to send them a contract get them to sign it and send it back to me, but I was thinking it would be so much better to have a form online which would be legally binding, I have found the ABA’s digital signature guidelines, which is incredibly comprehensive, my head is spinning, and I can’t really throw down the cash for a certificate from verisign yet.
the form would be simple enough, and if it were in an area which could only be accessed in a member only area with the form returning the name of the user who submitted it may be enough but I am not sure... formit could have be set up easily enough to have a checkmark box as required, but I am not sure if this is enough to hold up if any legal issues arise.
how do some of you more experienced web workers handle your contractual agreements?
One way that I can think of to add a stronger "confirmation" is to use email confirmation. This is where you can add an agreement link within an email. I haven’t implemented this myself, but I’ve seen it done. Hope this helps. Good luck

thanks rthrash! that seems exactly what I am looking for my options were limited create pdfs add reader features to allow signing and then send a walkthrough to the client so they could create their own digital id, which seems ok but a lot of clients seem to barely grasp the intricacies of word.
The alternative to digital ids with verisign and others are cost prohibitive for a small fry such as myself, but anyone who does design or developing work without a tight contract are asking for problems, especially with scope issues.
&@ adamnewman888, I was thinking about going that route as well, but my big concerns is in the wording of the ABA’s digital signature document (which you can download from their site), you have to be careful of claims that documents were submitted by someone other than the intended client, it’s a sticky situation.

I find the ’right signature’ route as the best possible solution to this problem also as i had the same predicument a few months back.
