If it makes sense you can put some of the keywords the individual pages are optimised for (assuming you are optimising your pages), this helps with both google knowing what you pages are about and also user navigation.

I would like to reiterate what others have already mentioned:
Breadcrumb trails do have some SEO advantages as they indicate internal linking, which has some "brownie point" weight with the search engines. And with large websites with multiple categories and sub-categories (silo structure, e-commerce, etc), breadcrumbs do help your visitors keep track of where they are at, especially if they just want to go back up one level and not all the way back to the home page or such.
In the last year, I read somewhere that there were studies done where breadcrumbs actually increased the changes of visitors staying on your website longer and thus a large potential for sales (if your site is e-commerce). I think this is backed by using the Webmaster overlay in your Webmaster tools of your Google account ... there are more clicks per page on breadcrumbs then other navigation areas.
