I actually had to go to http://wwww.mysite.co.za/MODx/setup to do the installation and have now completed it succesfully. I am in and very excited and looking forward to the next step. I have the "Welcome to your MODx content Manager" screen on my monitor!! My ISP technical dept was very helpful and suggested that I go to setup as appossed to install The techie guy at my ISP is also very keen to have a look at MODx and says that what he’s seen sofar it looks very interesting. So I’ve spread the MODx word!

I’ve never tried my own website design but I’m now doing the content management of my website using cmsmadeeasy.

That’s nice; however this is the MODx forums. We are, understandably I’m sure, rather partial to MODx.

With experience like yours, I wish I had half of it. How did you get the history? I would really like to learn a lot more about making a living on the internet.

I’m afraid my experience won’t be of much use to you; it involves a lot of abuse and abandonment, so I don’t do too well in a "live" working environment where I have to interact with people. Computers are safe, obedient, and infinitely patient. I can fumble through things as long as it takes to get it right without getting yelled at or beaten. And I can help others without being ridiculed, yelled at or beaten. Well, my financial adviser will get a little nervous if I do too much unpaid work, but even that’s at a distance, and certainly not violent or threatening.

The best general advice that I can give is to decide on something to stick to - specialization, (and not necessarily what anybody else thinks you ought to be doing with yourself), such as my decision to work with computers, then Web development, then programming with PHP/MySQL, then narrowing it down even more to MODx, then spend all your time and energy reading, studying and learning it, and become active in support, both on the forums and on your own site. That will provide the exposure and "advertising" needed to get all the work you can handle. My biggest problem now is that I sell myself cheaply, mostly a holdover from the years of being told how worthless and useless I was. It’s also hard for me to actually charge money for something that I enjoy doing so much!

Hm. Looks like I need to get out in the sunshine for a while. I do get a bit maudlin this time of year when even here in the howling desert the weather gets cloudy and dull from time to time.
